Appliances and big items
Buying discounted refrigerators, freezers and appliances: EnergyGuide and ENERGY STAR, measuring, recalls, warranties and getting them home.
Buying a discounted appliance
Do you sell liquidation appliances?
Yes: refrigerators, freezers and small appliances arrive as returns, overstock and open-box stock. See major appliances and small appliances.
Do you have open-box refrigerator deals?
When we have them, they are in our refrigerators category, each graded and photographed as the actual unit.
How big are overstock appliance discounts?
It varies by item. Where we have a retail price, it is shown struck through beside ours, with the saving as a percentage.
Is there a chest freezer for sale near me?
Check our upright and chest freezers category. Each freezer can be collected free in Brentwood, Maryland, or shipped where its listing allows.
What should I check on a discounted appliance before buying?
Its condition grade and photos, whether every shelf and part is there, its size against your space, how you will get it home, and its energy use.
What should I check on an appliance the day I get it?
That it powers on and runs, doors close and seal, nothing rattles, and nothing is missing. Report a problem within 7 days.
Can I return an appliance if it does not fit my kitchen?
No. A wrong fit is not a reason to return, so measure first — listings give approximate sizes, so leave a margin.
Do your appliances come with a manufacturer's warranty?
Some may still carry one, but we do not promise it. Check with the manufacturer using the model number on the listing.
Should I check if an appliance has been recalled?
Yes. Search the brand and model on SaferProducts.gov before you plug it in, as you would for any secondhand appliance.
Are appliances sold as "For parts" safe to plug in?
Do not assume so. A for-parts appliance is not promised to work and may have faults; have it checked before connecting it to power or water.
Energy use and running costs
What does the yellow EnergyGuide label show?
How much energy an appliance uses compared with similar models, and an estimated yearly operating cost based on typical use and a national average energy price.
Is the EnergyGuide running cost exact?
No, it is an estimate: your real cost depends on how you use the appliance and what you pay for energy locally.
Which appliances carry an EnergyGuide label?
Refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, dishwashers, water heaters, televisions, room and portable air conditioners, and several heating and cooling systems.
What if a discounted appliance has lost its EnergyGuide label?
Look inside the appliance, or look up the model on the manufacturer's website, which publishes the same figures.
What does ENERGY STAR mean on a refrigerator?
The model is about 9% more energy efficient than the federal minimum standard.
How much can an ENERGY STAR fridge save?
Replacing an old fridge with a certified one can save about $150 over the new model's 12-year life, according to ENERGY STAR.
What size of refrigerator is most energy efficient?
ENERGY STAR says the most efficient models are typically 16–20 cubic feet; bigger fridges use more energy.
Which refrigerator style uses the least energy?
Top-freezer models use the least, compared with bottom-freezer and side-by-side designs.
Is a cheaper appliance worth it if it uses more energy?
Compare purchase price plus running costs. An efficient model can cost more to buy but save money on bills over the years.
What should I do with my old fridge?
Recycle it rather than keeping it running as a spare; ENERGY STAR recommends recycling old refrigerators.
How much does a very old refrigerator cost to run?
ENERGY STAR estimates that a fridge over 15 years old could be costing you about $95 a year more to run than a new certified one.
Will the store take my old fridge away when I buy a new one?
Many appliance retailers will pick up and recycle your old refrigerator when you buy a new one, ENERGY STAR notes. DealsDMV does not deliver or collect appliances; you collect from our warehouse.
What temperature should my refrigerator be?
40 °F or below, with the freezer at 0 °F, the FDA says. Keep a thermometer in each and check them often — worth doing with a fridge you have just brought home.
Is a chest freezer more efficient than an upright?
Usually: its lid opens from the top, so less cold air escapes. ENERGY STAR lists a certified chest freezer at about 215 kWh a year against about 395 for an upright, though a chest takes more floor space.
Do manual-defrost freezers use less energy?
Yes — about half the energy of automatic-defrost models, ENERGY STAR says, as long as you defrost them regularly.
Can I keep a freezer in an unheated space?
ENERGY STAR advises keeping a freezer indoors, such as in a basement, unless you live in a mild climate, because extreme temperatures strain its compressor.
Is it worth replacing an old freezer?
Replacing an old freezer with an ENERGY STAR model could save about $300 over its 12-year life; certified freezers are at least 10% more efficient than others.
Where should I put my refrigerator?
Away from heat — an oven, a dishwasher or direct sunlight — with a few inches between it and the wall so air can circulate, ENERGY STAR advises.
Should I replace worn refrigerator door seals?
Yes. ENERGY STAR advises making sure the seals around the door are airtight and replacing them if they are not — worth checking on any open-box or used fridge.
Getting a big item home
How do I measure for a new appliance?
Measure the space, the doorways and halls on the way in, the room needed to open its door or lid fully, and the gap it needs for ventilation.
Will you deliver and install an appliance?
No installation. Appliances that ship are sent by carrier; the rest are collected from our warehouse, where you load your own vehicle.
How do I collect a refrigerator safely?
Bring a vehicle big enough to carry it upright if possible, a second person, and straps. You load and secure it, following our staff's safety instructions.
How long should a refrigerator stand before I switch it on?
Check the manufacturer's manual for your model — makers set their own wait after moving, especially if it travelled on its side.
Can I get help loading a heavy item at the warehouse?
Loading is your responsibility, so bring help. If a disability makes collecting hard, contact us and we will arrange another way.
