Checkout, payment and refunds
How checkout works, the cards and wallets we take, fees, Maryland sales tax, saved cards, refunds and store credit.
Checking out
What are the steps at checkout?
Give your contact details, choose shipping or collection for each item, enter your address for shipping or pick a time for collection, check the summary, place the order, then pay by card or digital wallet.
Why can't I see shipping prices at checkout yet?
Delivery is priced from your address. Enter your full delivery address and the live carrier rates appear.
Can I choose the delivery service at checkout?
Yes. Once your address is in, the checkout lists the carrier rates available for your parcel, and you pick one.
How do I choose my collection time at checkout?
Pick a time from the pickup-time list in the collection section. The summary then shows collection as free, with the time you chose.
Does the checkout summary show the full cost before I pay?
Yes: the items, the 2.5% service fee on Buy Now items, delivery or free collection, sales tax where it applies, and the estimated total.
What happens right after I place an order?
The checkout moves to its payment step. Once the payment goes through, you see "Thank you — your order is placed" and get a confirmation email.
What will the order confirmation email tell me?
For a parcel, its tracking number once it is posted; for collection, your collection details. You can follow the order any time from your orders page.
My payment failed after I placed the order. Is the order lost?
No. The order is saved. Use "Complete payment" on your orders page to try again.
Will you remind me about an order I have not paid for?
Yes. If an order is still waiting for payment two days after it was placed, we send one reminder by email with a link to it.
What happens to an order I never pay for?
Once it is clearly past its payment deadline with no payment on the way, it is cancelled automatically, its items go back on sale, and any store credit it used is returned to you.
Can I check out without creating an account?
No. Buying, bidding and offers all need a signed-in account, so your order, collection details and receipts have somewhere to live.
Where can I see an order after paying?
On your orders page. Each order shows what you bought, how it is being delivered or collected, and what happens next.
Paying
What payment methods do you accept?
Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover and debit cards, plus Apple Pay and Google Pay on phones.
Who processes my card payment?
Stripe. Your full card number goes straight to Stripe; we never see or store it.
Can I pay in cash when I collect?
No. Every payment is made online before collection; we do not take cash.
Can I pay by check, bank transfer or gift card?
No. Payment is by card or digital wallet only, through our online checkout.
Why did my bank ask me to confirm a payment?
Some banks add an extra check, such as a code or an app prompt, before approving a card payment. Approve it and the payment completes; nothing is wrong with your card.
My card keeps getting declined. What can I do?
Try another card or a digital wallet, and check your card's daily spending limit — an auction total can be larger than usual. If it still fails, contact us within 24 hours.
Is my payment information safe?
Yes. Payments go through Stripe over encrypted connections, and only your card's brand, last four digits and expiry are kept so you can choose it again.
Are prices on the site in US dollars?
Yes. DealsDMV sells in the United States only, and every price is in US dollars.
Am I responsible for charges if my credit card is stolen?
At most $50, the FTC says — and nothing if you report the card missing before anyone uses it. Call your card company straight away.
What if my debit card is stolen?
Report it fast: you owe nothing if you report before it is used, up to $50 within 2 business days, up to $500 within 60 days of your statement, and possibly everything taken after that.
Fees and sales tax
What fees does DealsDMV charge?
Buy Now orders carry a 2.5% service fee. Auction lots may carry a buyer's premium, and some a handling fee. Postage is charged when you choose shipping; collection is free.
Is collecting my order free?
Yes. Collection from our warehouse costs nothing; you pay only for postage when you choose shipping.
Do you charge sales tax?
Only Maryland's, at 6%, and only where the law requires it: on items collected at our Brentwood warehouse and on items shipped to a Maryland address.
Will I pay sales tax if I ship to Virginia or DC?
We do not collect sales tax for other states, so an order shipped outside Maryland shows none. Your own state may expect you to pay use tax on purchases like this yourself.
Why is sales tax only estimated at checkout?
Tax depends on where the order goes. It is worked out once your state is entered, and collection in Brentwood is always taxed at Maryland's rate.
Can I buy tax-free for resale?
Yes, with a valid resale or exemption certificate given to us before you pay. If the certificate turns out not to be valid, the tax it covered is owed.
Is sales tax charged on the shipping cost?
No. On a Maryland order the carrier's shipping charge, shown on its own line, is not taxed. The service fee is taxed, as part of the price of the goods.
Does Maryland sales tax change by county?
No. Maryland has one statewide 6% rate with no county or city additions, so the tax is the same whichever Maryland address you use.
What is use tax?
A state tax on using, storing or consuming goods bought from an out-of-state seller that charged no sales tax. You pay it to your own state yourself, usually at its sales tax rate.
Saved cards
How do I save a card to my account?
Open your account, press Add Card and enter the card. It is stored with Stripe, and you can make it your default.
How do I change which card is charged for auction wins?
Make another saved card your default on your account page. The default card is the one charged automatically when you win a lot.
How do I remove an expired card?
On your account page, remove it from your saved cards. Make sure another card is set as default if you are bidding.
What do you keep about my saved card?
Only its brand, last four digits and expiry date, so you can recognise it. The full number stays with Stripe.
Refunds and store credit
How long does a refund take to reach me?
Refunds go back to the card or account you paid with and usually appear within 5–10 business days of being issued.
How will I know a refund was issued?
We email you when it is issued, with the amount and what it was for. A partial refund says so.
Can I have store credit instead of a refund?
Yes. When a problem report is approved, you can choose store credit instead of a refund to your card.
Does store credit expire?
No. Store credit we give you never expires and can be spent on anything on the site.
Can I turn store credit into cash?
No, except where the law requires it. Store credit is for spending on the site.
How do I use my store credit?
It is applied at checkout, before your card is charged for the rest.
What should I do if a charge looks wrong?
Tell us first and we will look into it. You can still dispute a charge with your bank; while a dispute is open, bidding on the account may be paused.
What do you send my bank if I dispute a charge?
Through Stripe, our records of that sale: your bids, your agreement to our Terms, and the pickup or delivery record.
Will I be refunded if you cancel my order?
Yes. If we cancel something you paid for and do not deliver it, we refund what you paid for it.
What is a chargeback?
Money returned to you by your card's bank after you dispute a charge with it — for example, for goods that never arrived or a purchase you did not make.
What is friendly fraud?
Disputing a card charge you really did authorise, to get the money back while keeping what you bought. It is a form of fraud.
When checkout cannot finish
Why does checkout say something in my cart is no longer available?
It sold or was taken down after you added it. Remove it in your cart, or choose another option of the same product, then check out again.
Why does checkout ask me to fix quantities?
Fewer are left than your cart holds, because someone bought some after you added them. Lower the quantity in your cart to continue.
Why can't I ship items from different warehouses in one order?
Items being shipped must leave from one building to go in one parcel. Order the items from one warehouse first, then come back for the rest.
Why does checkout say it could not price delivery to my address?
We could not get a delivery price for the address as written, so the order cannot be placed yet. Check the address; if it is right, try again in a moment.
Why does checkout say it could not work out my total?
Try again in a moment. If it keeps happening, an item in your basket may no longer be available — check it in your cart.
Why does checkout say my total changed?
A price, fee or tax setting changed between showing you the total and you pressing pay, so the order was stopped rather than charge an amount you never saw. Review the new total and order again.
Why does my cart say a price changed?
The price of an option in your cart was updated after you added it. Review your cart before checkout; the order uses the current price.
Why was the pickup time I chose refused at checkout?
It filled up, has already passed, or was withdrawn while you were checking out. Choose another time and place the order again.
Why does the site say online checkout is closed?
Checkout is paused for a short while. Your cart is saved — check back shortly, or contact us to arrange the purchase.
Checkout says my bank is still processing the payment. What now?
Some payments take a few minutes to settle. Check your orders page shortly to see whether it went through.
Why isn't my new order on my orders page yet?
It can take a moment to appear after you pay. Refresh your orders page shortly; the confirmation page tells you once the order is confirmed.
