Liquidation merchandise

What is liquidation merchandise?

Goods a retailer could not, or would rather not, sell at full price: customer returns, overstock, end-of-line stock, open-box items and products in damaged packaging, sold on at a discount.

What is retail return merchandise?

Items shoppers bought and sent back. Retailers expected 15.8% of their 2025 sales to come back — about $849.9 billion of goods.

Where do store returns go?

Many are consolidated, sorted in large facilities and shipped back to the retailer in bulk. What cannot be sold again as new is then sold on another way — often through liquidation.

What happens to items that are returned to stores?

It depends on their condition. A sealed, unwanted item can go back on the shelf; one that has been opened, used or damaged cannot be sold as new, so it is sold on at a discount — which is how it reaches shops like ours.

How many online purchases get returned?

Far more than in-store ones: retailers estimated 19.3% of online sales were returned in 2025.

Were returns higher or lower in 2025 than in 2024?

About the same share: retailers expected 15.8% of 2025 sales to be returned, against 16.9% — $890 billion — in 2024.

Are some returns fraudulent?

Yes. Retailers estimate that 9% of returns are fraudulent — a good reason to buy from a seller that opens, checks and photographs what it sells.

What is overstock inventory resale?

Selling on goods a retailer or maker ordered or made too many of. Overstock is usually new and boxed, just surplus to what the shop could sell.

What is the difference between overstock and customer returns?

Overstock was never sold, so it is usually new. A customer return was sold and sent back, so it may be opened, used or missing parts — its grade says which.

What are salvage goods?

Items sold as they are — often damaged or not working — for their parts or for repair, without warranty.

Is liquidation merchandise new?

Some is: overstock and unopened returns can be brand new. Much is open-box, used or damaged. Each item's condition grade tells you which.

Is liquidation merchandise stolen?

Legitimate liquidation stock comes from retailers' returns, surplus and closeouts sold through the trade. Ours arrives with records from our source, which is where a lot's manifest comes from.

Why is liquidation merchandise so cheap?

Because condition is uncertain and the retailer wants the space and money back. Returns cannot be sold as new, and bulk buyers take on the work of sorting and checking them.

What share of all sales do shoppers return?

Retailers expected 15.8% of their annual sales to come back as returns in 2025, and 17% of holiday sales.

Why do some stores charge for returns?

Mostly cost: the rising cost of processing returns was the leading reason retailers gave, cited by 40% of those charging, the National Retail Federation found.

How is an overstock store different from Goodwill?

Goodwill is a nonprofit that sells donated clothing and household goods in more than 3,200 stores to fund job training. An overstock store sells retailers' surplus stock, which is usually new.

Shopping liquidation well

Start small, with an item you know. Read its condition grade and photos, compare with the new price, check the fees, and collect or check it as soon as you can.

What is the best liquidation shopping tip for beginners?

Buy items you can judge yourself. If you know what a good one looks like, the photos and condition notes tell you everything you need.

Compare against the item's real new price rather than its "was" price, watch items you want, and count the service fee, tax and delivery before deciding.

How do I compare a liquidation price with retail?

Look up the same model new from a regular store. DealsDMV shows a retail price struck through where it has one, so the saving is visible.

Should I test liquidation items as soon as I get them?

Yes. Test and inspect straight away: problems must be reported within 7 days, and some faults only show when an item is used.

Is it safe to use a liquidation item straight away?

Inspect and test it first. Liquidation goods can be missing parts, instructions or safety labels, and should be checked against recall lists before use.

How do I know if a liquidation item has been recalled?

Search for it on SaferProducts.gov, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's site, before you use or resell it.

Why are prices different for the same item on different days?

Auction prices are set by whoever bids, and we review slow-selling fixed-price items from time to time — so watching an item can pay off.

Do DealsDMV prices drop automatically over time?

No price drops on a timer. We review items that have not sold and may lower them by hand, so a price can change, but never by itself.
